grapefruit dietThe Grapefruit Diet, also called the “Mayo Clinic Diet”, is the classic example of a fad. Breakfast is two slices of bacon, two eggs any style and half a grapefruit or unsweetened grapefruit juice. Lunch and dinner are unsweetened grapefruit juice or half a grapefruit, with any amount of meat, vegetables and salad dressing. You stay on the grapefruit diet for 12 days and go off for two days and then start over again.

To quote from the Mayo Clinic, “For more than 40 years the so-called ‘Mayo Clinic diet’ has surfaced in many forms and many places. Various versions push the grapefruit diet or eggs or meat and promise to peel off pounds magically. We can offer you clear and official advice: Don’t believe any of these diets. They did not originate at Mayo Clinic and are not approved by Mayo Clinic. There may promote a temporary, quick weight loss, however, these diets are neither a safe method of weight loss for long-term success nor nutritionally balanced. Such diets may be dangerous for some people.”

The Grapefruit Diet Rules:
* You must drink eight 8oz. glasses of water daily (64 oz. total per day).
* At every meal you may eat until you are full.
* You must eat the minimum listed at every meal.
* You may not eliminate anything from the diet.
* Don’t add or reduce the quantity of grapefruit or juice. The grapefruit is the catalyst that accelerates the fat burning process.
* Only one cup of coffee per day. It hinders the fat burning process by modifying the insulin balance.
* No snacking between meals.
* You may fry with and use butter generously.
* You may not eat bread, white vegetables, sweet potatoes or desserts.
* You may eat double or triple helpings of salads, vegetables and meat.
* Stuff yourself. The more you eat the more weight you will lose.
* Stay on the grapefruit diet for 12 days, stop for 2 days, then repeat.
