New Cancer Drug

by Health Weight Loss in Health

Scientists discover how a wild, parasitic, mushroom Cancer Drug works.

Cordycepin, commonly used in Chinese medicine, was originally extracted from a rare kind of parasitic mushroom that grows on caterpillars. This astonishing, vital-health discovery is opening up possibilities of treatment in a wide range of different cancers.

At a low dose cordycepin inhibits the uncontrolled growth and division of the cells, and at high doses it stops cells from sticking together, which also inhibits growth.

Both of these effects probably have the same underlying mechanism – that cordycepin interferes with how cells make proteins.

At low doses cordycepin interferes with the production of mRNA, the molecule that gives instructions on how to assemble a protein. And at higher doses it has a direct impact on the making of proteins.

Jenny Craig Diet

by Health Weight Loss in Health

jenny-craig-tomato-riceJenny Craig promotes a reduced calorie diet that focuses on a nutritional balance of 60%carbs, 20%fat and 20%protein and follows the Food Guide Pyramid.

The diet consists of 1200 calories/day, give or take a few hundred based on weight and age, which is a bit aggressive for the long-term. Exercise is not a primary health focus.

The Jenny Craig approach focuses on pre-packaged meals, which can be convenient and helpful in dealing with controlling your portion size, but it often fails to prepare the dieter for food preparation once the diet ends.

The key to the success of this diet is the transitional period when the client goes from pre-packaged to regular, prepared meals.

Learning the proper habits, which are essential for long-term success, takes a back seat to short-term weight loss goals.

You are assisted by a weekly journal and one-on-one sessions with a counselor, who is not a registered dietition, but a person hired and trained by the company.

The primary focus of these sessions is teaching a healthy relationship with food and behaviour modification, which includes living a more active lifestyle. Many clients consider this the best part of the program and very helpful.

IRS allows taxpayers to deduct fees associated with this program.

Detox Diets

by Health Weight Loss in Health

detox diet green soupDetox Diets, proponents say, eliminate from the body toxins encountered in daily life — polluted air and water, hormones in some foods, and even harmful chemicals in cleaning products. The body ordinarily processes those toxins through the liver and kidneys.

Detox diets can last anywhere from one weekend to a whole month and are designed to eliminate this build-up of poisons from your body.

During the course of certain programs, the practitioner avoids animal products and dairy and goes vegan. Some programs even include abstaining from confrontation with others, billing itself as a holistic detox.

Another variant starts off on a plant-based diet, moves on to raw food and then goes on a blended liquid fast.

The blended liquid is a greenish concoction called “energy soup” consisting of pulverized alfalfa, barley grass, algae, herbs, enzymes, and antioxidants.

Many of these diets also encourage you to undergo “colonic irrigation,” (aka enema, which flushes out your rectum and colon using water), to “clean out” your colon. Other plans recommend herbal supplements to help the cleansing process.

For many purists, fasting (“water only”) is the way to go.

The word detoxification is usually associated with therapies that help people in getting over their addictions, and without a doubt, food, a necessity of life, can be an addiction too. Detox diets are means to purged the body of dietary impurities and enhance the over all health of the individual.

There are number of different ways in which you can adopt this diet. Eating fiber rich foods help in cleansing the body by eliminating the toxic waste through regular bowel movements.

Besides the obvious change in body shape, people often experience increased energy levels, improved digestion, clearer looking, radiant skin, and many other benefits from dieting. More importantly, as Americans become increasingly obese, they are faced with the scourge of diabetes and the associated blindness, amputations and organ failures.

Helpful hints to keep in mind when dieting -

Irritability, hunger and tiredness are possible side effects of any diet. However, these symptoms are easily remedied with three Big Macs and a half gallon of Breyer’s Rocky Road. The reduced carb intake will indeed rob you of energy and people do tend to get “grumpy” when they’re hungry.

Vegetarian detox diets lack certain nutrients that are generally found in animal food products. As a result, you should give special attention to protein and calcium. Soy beans are a great source of protein without the sugars (gas) or other beans.

A detox diet can be a great way to jump-start your weight loss, and rid your body of harmful impurities.

Your body will be slightly vulnerable while it clears itself out of toxic build-up. If the diet doesn’t come with a supplement, then consider picking up an anti-oxidant rich supplement. The anti-oxidants will help neutralize free radicals and support your immune system.

Prepare yourself, once the detox diet is done the real work begins. To avoid gaining your old weight back (or, yikes!, even more), determine that you will NEVER return to your old habits and diet.

We’re talking “Major Life Change” here! Jumping back into the Crispy Cremes and Cokes for breakfast will negate any of the good you did, plus it will help fill your body back up with chemicals and harmful impurities. Instead, focus on eating fresh produce, whole-grain bread products and lean proteins.

Curve Weight Loss

by Health Weight Loss in Health

curve-weight-loss-spinningCurve Weight Loss facilities are decidedly glamour free, open just seven hours a day, with no showers, massages or fruit smoothies. You walk in, follow the Curve Weight Loss drill and leave.

Curve has broken through the perception that you have to be fit, coordinated and thin to go to a gym. And you will find more women in sweat pants than Spandex.

Curves’ gyms are small, simple workout joints, often in strip malls, that cater to women who are over 30, overweight and have never worked out before.

They offer only one health service: a tightly structured, 30-min. circuit-training workout on eight to 12 exercise machines. A recorded voice tells you when to move to the next machine.

An exerciser spends only 30 seconds at a station, then keeps her heart rate up by walking or jogging in place before moving to the next one.

Costs are an initiation fee of $40 to $70 and monthly rate of $29 to $49, depending on location.

Because muscle weighs more than fat, Curves weight loss measures success in inches, not pounds lost.

The Ornish Diet

by Health Weight Loss in Health

ornish diet gazpachoThe Ornish Diet is a low fat, vegetarian program that prohibits animal meat and animal by-products except for non-fat milk, non-fat yogurt and egg whites. Fish is also excluded on the Ornish diet.

Fat is severly limited as is caffeinated products (colas, coffees, teas, chocolates, etc.). Cooking oils as well as high fat plant foods such as Avocados, nuts and seeds are excluded.

Some experts criticize the diet as being too difficult for most people and not allowing sufficient, essential fats.

The diet recommends a minimal to moderate use of salt and sugar, 70-75% of total calories from carbohydrates and 15-20% of calories from proteins.

Several studies report an impact on the reduction of heart disease. And, some adherents refer to the program as the “Reversal Diet”, claiming that it reverses heart disease.

Walking is the preferred form of exercise, 30 minutes per day or one hour three times per week at 50% to 80% of their maximum heart rate.

The program also deals with stress management, depression, and emotional relationships.

South Beach Diet

by Health Weight Loss in Health

south-beach-diet-turkey-veggiesThe South Beach Diet, designed by cardiologist Arthur Agatston and dietician Marie Almon, consists of three phases which attempt to regulate blood sugar and insulin.

The First Phase of the South Beach Diet, which lasts two weeks, allows you normal-sized helpings of lean meats, such as chicken, turkey, fish, and shellfish. Vegetables are also allowed, as are nuts, cheese, and eggs. A salad with olive oil dressing is fine. Coffee and tea are OK; but, lots and lots of water is essential.

The typical breakfast is two eggs and lean bacon. Lunch is salad greens with grilled chicken. A small amount of dry-roasted nuts makes up an afternoon snack. Dinner is lean meat again with fiber-rich vegetables. Cheese and low-fat yogurt are allowed, as is sugar-free gelatin for dessert.

The Second Phase is similar to the first phase, but you’ll start to reintroduce some of the banned foods. You can start eating high-fiber carbohydrates, such as whole-grain breads, which raise your insulin levels in a much milder way than do simple, starchy carbs.

Forbidden in those first 14 days, however, are fruit, bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, or baked goods. No sugar, ice cream, cookies, or cake. And no alcoholic drinks of any kind (wine, fruit and whole-grain breads may be added back to the diet in subsequent phases).

The Third Phase of the diet is really all about weight maintenance, which Dr. Agatston describes as a “way of life.” Should your weight begin to climb, you simply repeat the South Beach diet process.

The Atkins Diet severely restricts all carbohydrates during the initial phase. South Beach diet, on the other hand, groups “good” and “bad” carbohydrates based on their glycemic index, a measure of how foods affect your blood sugar.

Womens Heart Attack Symptoms

by Health Weight Loss in Health

artificial-heart attack symptomsWomen’s Heart Attack Symptoms frequently go unnoticed or ignored. Even people in apparently good physical health suffer infarction.

Women’s heart attack symptoms may be ignored because women:

  • fail to recognize that the symptoms could indicate a heart attack
  • do not realize how important it is to get immediate treatment
  • are embarrassed at the prospect of a “false alarm”

Why might a woman not realize she’s having a heart attack? Because a woman’s symptoms is more likely than a man’s to lack the most common warning signals of sudden, intense chest pain.

Instead, a woman’s heart attack might trigger:

* mild chest discomfort
* pressure, squeezing, tightness, or fullness
* discomfort in one or both arms, or in the back, neck, jaw, or stomach
* shortness of breath that lasts more than a couple of seconds
* breaking out in a cold sweat
* nausea and/or vomiting
* dizzyness

Women having a heart attack are much more apt than men to experience shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, and back or jaw pain.

Everyone should be aware of all the possible heart attack warning signs. If you or someone you love experiences these symptoms, call 911 or another local emergency service right away. Paramedics are trained to begin life-saving treatment in the ambulance. So, taking an ambulance to the hospital is a better option than being driven by a friend or relative.

Receiving treatment for a heart attack within one hour may mean the difference between life and death.

Even if you’ve already had a heart attack, it pays to brush up on your knowledge of warning signs. A second heart attack might cause completely different symptoms than the first.

Health Savings Account

by Health Weight Loss in Health

health-savings-account-woman-doctorOne of the most underutilized tools in the insurance world is the modern Health Savings Account or HSA.

A health savings account can be used to cover the health insurance deductible and any co-payments for medical services, prescriptions, or products.

In addition, health savings account funds can be used to purchase over-the-counter drugs and longterm care insurance, and to pay health insurance premiums during any period of unemployment.

Coupled with low-cost, high-deductible “Catastrophic” insurance coverage, a HSA could be an attractive alternative for those who feel that a standard health policy is unaffordable.

HSA plans are designed to have a higher than normal deductible, and as a beneficial result, a much lower monthly premium to be paid. The deductibles are either for a single person (which can run up to $5,000) and family (up to $10,000) but when the deductibles are covered, the procedure expenses are paid 100%.

The money which a person saves on monthly premium is supposed to be invested in to the Health Savings Account, which can take the form of a separate bank account at most major banks, or an investment fund approved for HSA deposits typically paying more interest benefit.

A debit card is issued for the account chosen, and all prescriptions, medical procedures, dental, vision, and any other health related bill is paid from the account.

As long as the account is used properly for medical expenses, the money invested into the account is tax advantaged: Up to $2850 for singles, $5650 for families, and is arguably the thrilling part of having one.

In case of emergency a policyholder may not have had the time to save enough to cover deductibles and medications. In all cases, expenses before the “Catastrophic” coverage begins, is the patient’s legal responsibility. However, the catastrophic policy guarantees the large expenses of potentially ruinous accidents, injuries and illnesses.

The separate accident and critical care coverage off-sets major shocks, such as cancer, loss of limbs, and the expenses of extended care. This keeps the premiums and deductibles more affordable, and covers the large amounts of cash that may be needed immediately to pay for an emergency room, or other catastrophe.

The key to all of this for the self employed health insurance buyer is to work with a health agent who cares enough to dig in to the details of what ancillary policies would be best, covering everything from accidents and the top illnesses, to which discount program to use for dental and vision.

The HSA is one of the best weapons for the highest payers of health insurance, which are self employed individuals with no group plan to cover them. Take advantage of any of the top company plans, and choose your agent carefully. There are plenty of reliable health insurance companies out there. Find an agent that knows what ancillary tools to put in to perfect your HSA, and reap the premium and tax advantaged savings.

HSAs are similar to medical savings accounts (MSAs). However, MSA eligibility has been restricted to employees of small businesses and the self-employed. HSAs are open to everyone with a high deductible health insurance plan. The only limitation on the health plan is that the annual deductible must be at least $1,000 for individual coverage and at least $2,000 for family coverage.

Contributions to Health Savings Accounts by an employer are not included in the individual’s taxable income. Contributions by an individual are tax deductible. Individuals, their employers, or both can contribute tax-deductible funds each year up to the amount of the policy’s annual deductible, subject to a cap of $2,600 for individuals and $5,150 for families. Individuals aged 55-64 can make additional contributions.

The interest and investment earnings generated by the account are also not taxable while in the Health Savings Accounts. Amounts distributed are not taxable as long as they are used to pay for qualified medical expenses, such as prescription and over-the-counter drugs and long-term care services as well as the purchase of continued health care coverage for the unemployed individual (via COBRA).

HSAs are the ultimate in “portability”. An individual is not dependent on a particular employer to enjoy the advantages of having an HSA. Like an individual retirement account (IRA), the HSA is owned by the individual, not the employer. If the individual changes jobs, the HSA goes with the him or her.

Sexual Health

by Health Weight Loss in Health

sexual-health-marilynmonroeWomens Sexual Health studies indicate that more women suffer from poor sex drive then men.

In fact, approximately 58% of womens sexual health problems was simply a lack of sexual motivation, while only 27% of the men questioned had ever experienced poor sex drive or troubled arousal.

Factors like stress, diet, menopause, hormonal changes, parenting, age and other contributors make it easy to understand why so many women share this common problem.

Sex may go from something you do because you can’t keep your hands off each other, to free entertainment on a Friday night because there’s nothing better on TV.

Most of us assume that the sex we enjoy in the first, heady days of a relationship will be the best we can expect and it’s all downhill from then.

But here’s the good news. Womens sexual health can improve overtime, not worsen and it’s easy to bring the freshness and excitement back. In fact, the sort of sex enjoyed by a couple who’ve been together for some time can be far more exciting and adventurous than early-days sex.

The one big advantage an established couple have over a new partnership is that there’s a level of trust that makes it more comfortable to ask for something different and new, that might be embarrassing with a relative stranger.

Womens sexual health requires that you make an effort; go out of your way to consciously continue making romantic gestures and suggesting new approaches, it’s worth it.

The reason sex is so exciting in the first stages of a relationship is that you ‘psyche’ yourself up to enjoy it. Sexual arousal has more to do with what you hope and imagine is going to happen than what the two of you actually do when you get it together.

Womens sexual health expectation and anticipation can fuel love, lust, and longing so neither of you can miss. Because you’re primed for arousal and primed for satisfaction; the sex can be hurried and clumsy, or leisurely and expert – it doesn’t matter because it’s all exciting anyway.

sexual-health-coupleI have very little idea what I’m doing talking about healthy sex. And, maybe the world hasn’t really changed in the last few thousand years and we shouldn’t talk about such things.

But, then again, sex is going to happen, It’s got to happen. It’s our very survival. Although with in vitro, sex is no longer necessary; men are not quite superfluous (who was Jude Law’s character in AI?).

What prompted this post was an article I just read about the “Sensitive Modern Man” holding his wife’s hand during child birth. I see nothing wrong with that and it’s so sweet. Then an article about how the Hiuchol indians of Mexico/Guatemala would tie rope around the husband’s testicles for the wife to yank on during labor. Sensitive or not, you better treat her right, guys.

Diabetic Diets | Low Carb

by Health Weight Loss in Health

diabetic-diets-beef-medallionsDiabetic Diets are effective whether you are a type 1 or type 2 diabetic.

Diabetes diets recommend what, when, and how much you should eat to control your blood glucose level and the insulin needed to burn the glucose.

Blood glucose is the main sugar found in the blood and the body’s main source of energy. If you have diabetes (or impaired glucose tolerance), your blood glucose can go too high if you eat too much. If your blood glucose goes too high, you can get sick. Diabetes can damage every organ in the human body.

If your blood glucose stays high too much of the time, you can get heart, eye, foot, kidney, and other problems. You can also have problems if your blood glucose gets too low (hypoglycemia).

Eighty percent of people who are obese have hyperinsulinemia which means that they have high levels of insulin in their blood. Their body’s cells become insulin resistant, so the body must produce more insulin to keep blood sugar in a normal range. With extra body fat, the muscle cells are particularly insulin resistant, so blood sugar cannot be broken down as well compared to thin people.

The pancreas (which produces insulin) must work harder in the body of a person who is obese to produce more insulin and to keep blood sugar under control. Losing weight improves the body’s sensitivity to insulin.

Keeping your blood glucose at a healthy level will prevent or slow down many health problems. Allmost everyone’s glucose uptake can be improved with an intelligent and sensible diet.

Your blood glucose can also go too high or drop too low if you don’t take the right amount of diabetic medicine. Ask your doctor what a healthy blood glucose level is for you!

To help maintain blood glucose at a healthy level.

* Eat about the same amount of food each day.
* Eat your meals and snacks at about the same times each day.
* Do not skip meals or snacks.
* Take your medicines at the same times each day.
* Exercise at about the same times each day.

Diabetic Diets attempt to regulate blood glucose, usually by limiting carbohydrates.

Carbohydrates convert into glucose, the main sugar found in the blood and the body’s primary source of energy.

Diabetic diets are effective whether you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes. What, when, and how much you eat can all change your blood glucose.

If your blood glucose stays high too much of the time, you can get heart, eye, foot, kidney, and other problems. In fact, diabetes can damage every organ in your body. You can also have problems if your blood glucose gets too low (hypoglycemia). Diabetic diets address both of these conditions.

The number of Americans with diabetes will nearly double in the next 25 years, and the costs of treating them will triple, according to a new report by the University of Chicago.

The findings, recently published in the journal Diabetes Care, predict that by 2034, 44.1 million Americans will be living with diabetes — nearly twice the current number of 23.7 million. About 90 percent of those with diabetes have type 2, a version of the condition that develops over time.

Accounting for inflation, the direct medical cost of treating them will rise from $113 billion annually to $336 billion.

The staggering numbers in the new paper dwarf potential savings that have lately been discussed. The lead author of the study considers the predictions “very conservative” because they don’t account for the growing proportion of overweight children and teenagers, who are at higher risk for developing diabetes. The surge in diabetes may even be worse than the projections.

The estimates also don’t factor in immigration, or the rising population of ethnic minorities. Latinos and African-Americans suffer diabetes at higher rates than the U.S. population as a whole.

Type 1 diabetes is a condition in which a person loses the ability to break down glucose in the blood and turn food into energy. The condition often develops when people are young.

In type 2 diabetes, the condition develops over time. The process is complex, but aside from ethnic background, risk factors include having a family history of diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease. The most common risk factor is simply being overweight.

Even modest weight loss will reduce the chance of developing type 2 diabetes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
More ambitious lifestyle changes, such as diet, regular exercise and assistance through counseling lowered the risk of diabetes by 58 percent, even without medication, in a major federally funded study.

As the “Boomers” hit the health care system in full force the diabetes caseload is expected to rise from 8.2 million people to 14.6 million.

Three in four adults with diabetes uses oral medication to control the disease. About one in four takes insulin.

Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, according to the American Diabetes Association, and nerve damage and damaged blood vessels are also common. About 15 percent of diabetics require amputation of a lower extremity at some point in their life.

Lawmakers are debating the idea of allowing insurers to charge higher premiums to people who don’t meet certain health benchmarks, such as losing weight if they’re obese.

Diabetes, is among the most preventable major illnesses, and weight loss is the usual prescription.
