weight loss calculatorThe BMI is the Weight Loss Calculator most widely used in the health care field to determine a person’s healthy weight. Current weight loss calculators have replaced the older weight charts that made allowances for age. Charts are no longer considered the most accurate measure of “ideal body weight”. For many years people were confused and disappointed because they weren’t “normal” according to standard charts. One study found that 64% of Americans weigh more than weight charts suggest, and another 14% are “underweight” according to the charts. That’s 78% of Americans who weren’t “normal”.

The first weight chart was a statistical report created by Metropolitan Insurance in 1959 and only slightly revised in 1979. The research was mostly based on white males, and economically biased. It did not reflect any real population. People do come in many sizes. The charts were not based on medical studies, and are no longer (and never were) popular.

The weight loss calculators used by the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, the US National Center for Health Statistics, the North American Association for the Study of Obesity, and the US Army are all different.

One would think that with the enormous amount of time and money spent on weight loss diets and programs, people would be getting thinner. Yet, US. Department of Health statistics show that Americans are getting fatter and living longer.

National Institutes of Health and other studies show that 98% of people who lose weight gain it back within five years. And 90% of those gain back more weight than they lost. The failure of weight loss programs is so great that a leading researcher has said, “Dieting is the leading cause of obesity in the US.”

Physicians, dieticians, and weight management professionals now generally agree that instead of a weight loss calculator and a weight chart, the most accurate measurement of healthy weight is the BMI (Body Mass Index).
